Crocs Post 09 - Comfy Crocs at the LA County Fair

Comfy Crocs at the County Fair

What could be more fun than a few hours at the county fair? Especially when it’s Pomona Day and we’d get to participate in a parade! Yes, county fairs are a uniquely American summer tradition that most people can’t resist. Colorful exhibits, exciting rides, beautiful arts and crafts, culinary competitions, animal and livestock shows and demonstrations, concerts, and of course the famous (or should I say infamous) fair food.

Just some of the fair delicacies.

The talented Garey High School Band!

So, a few weeks ago Bruce and I headed over (with empty stomachs of course) to the LA County Fair to join in the fun and celebrate Pomona Day.  The LA County Fair honors its neighboring communities by declaring a day for each.  Civic officials, city employees, local businesses, and high school bands all gather to march through the fairgrounds and proudly display their city’s finest.  On Pomona Day, we were joined by vintage cars and the Budweiser Clydesdales.  We didn’t get to ride either one of those though.  Instead, we were in the back of a pick-up truck, happily waving to all the spectators as we snaked our way though the fairgrounds.

The Pomona librarians and their truck!

Pomona’s finest librarians, of whom Bruce is one (yes, we’re a two librarian household!)  took the opportunity to promote their Big Read program at Pomona Day.  This year the Big Read will feature Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.  Many events are planned around this city-wide reading program. (More on The Big Read in a later post.)

After the parade Bruce and I walked around and sampled some of the finer fair cuisine.  Chocolate dipped, on-a-stick, deep-fried, and barbequed seemed to be the preparation modes of choice.  Turkey legs as big as my thigh were lined up on grill after grill.  I stayed away from some of the more novel food items like chocolate covered bacon and pickles or deep fried coca-cola, but I did indulge in a few items I might normally avoid like funnel cakes smothered in powdered sugar.  Mmmmm to that but not to this:

This didn't look too appetizing.

Nor did this!

Some of the animals were quite unusual...

It was fun to be part of a community happening at what’s been called the largest county fair in North America.  The LA County Fair continues through October 3, so if you’re in the area, you might want to check it out.  You’d be amazed at what you might find there!

And don’t forget to wear your comfy Crocs whenever you have a lot of walking to do.    I wore my reliable brown Mary Janes at the LA Fair and they kept me moving smoothly all day.

Speaking of the Crocs Mary Jane, check out the new Wrapped Mary Jane.  All the comfort of the original with added suede and stylish stitching.  I think these might be my new favs!
